Hetero Bàsico is an indipendent print magazine based in Barcelona.

After completing our Master in Art Direction, my dearest Simon and I felt the need to create something of our own. We had already worked together on a magazine project in Iceland, and that experience sparked the idea of creating a publication about the world of creative people — those who think outside the box shaped by our society. Through this magazine, we wanted to explore that world using our perspective as art directors.

“We had a clear goal: to create a magazine that, over time, would become a community. A magazine that would let us play with creativity. A magazine to connect with people whose identities are tied to the creative world in all its aspects.

The magazine represents the time we’ve spent wanting to dedicate ourselves to the world of design, and it materializes our journey as creatives. In August of the following year, after completing the Master’s program, it happened. That was when the seed of what would become Hetero Básico was planted. After a few messages, we were sure: we were going to start a project together and see how far we could take it. From September 2023 to October 2024, we have worked tirelessly to shape the project. And yes, we started with the roof before the foundation.

We began with the name, Hetero Básico, which came to us like a religious epiphany. Well, not exactly religious. The day I called Matteo a “hetero básico” for wearing a “Proyecto Desnudo” t-shirt stuck in his mind, and recalling that moment, we knew it was what we wanted. From there, everything grew, starting with the conceptualization and creating the image to present ourselves to the world.

Our logo: a pixelated face. But not just any face—the image comes directly from Renaissance paintings and the Bible. After all, wasn’t Adam, from Adam and Eve, the first hetero básico? (At least, that’s what they say).

All this sounds quick, but it took months of long conversations, coffees, beers, cigarettes, and endless mood boards until we arrived at an image that represented us and, most importantly, one we believed in. You’ve already gotten to know the concept in the manifesto, and our goal from day one remains the same: to enjoy creating, without prejudice and with freedom.

Now it’s in your hands. We hope you enjoy the first issue as much as we enjoyed creating it.”
